Professor Tomas Kroksmark
Curriculum Vitae
Born 1950
Swedish citizenship
Since 1982, I have been working as a researcher within the field of General Education and /or General Didactics/Didaktik. The focus of his research is the relationships between theories of teaching and learning, history of teaching and learning, and teaching and learning practises. Since 2003, I have been focusing on studying and solving the mystery of digitalised learning, including strategies, tactics and styles. I have been answering the question “How does digitalised learning differ from what is called analogical learning?”. Since my thesis in 1987, I have published nearly 100 academic works including books and articles.
I have been a full Professor in Education at three different universities in Sweden – University of Umeå, University of Göteborg, and Jönköping University (2001- ) and for one year I had a visiting professor's chair at Luleå Tekniska Universitet. Furthermore, I am appointed as Assistant Professor/Docent in Education at Helsinki University, in Finland. This is as an honorary member of the faculty. I received this chair as a result of good research co-operation between Helsinki University, University of Göteborg, and Jönköping University, and in the creation a School of Research for Doctoral students in Jönköping.
In Umeå, Göteborg and Jönköping I have worked with research in General Education / Didactics, supervised doctoral students, twelve of whom to their Ph D examination. I have also taught students at all university levels. In 1999, I was awarded the sum of 50.000 SEK as the best teacher at the University of Göteborg. I have frequently participated as keynote speaker in National and International conferences and in addition I have arranged research conferences. In 1992, I was appointed the best speaker at Comenius’ Heritage and Education of Man for the 21st Century, the celebration of Johann Amos Comenius 400th birthday, engaging 1.200, researchers from all over the world. I have been the invited researcher to many different universities in the world including Moscow, Hebrew Jerusalem, Cambridge, Columbia, Melbourne, Paris, Gloustershire and California. I have also extensive experience in the popularisation of research results to local schools by giving lectures to teachers and by publishing newspaper articles. In 2009 I received The Studentlitteratur Publisching House: Academic Textbook price 2009. 25.000 SEK
Furthermore:
I have served as a national and international faculty opponent at 14 doctoral disputations.
I have been a member of the examining committee for doctoral thesis 19 times.
I have been called in as an outside expert/referee in appointing professors, assistant professors, senior lectures 31 times, nationally and internationally.
I have been a member of the department board at the Department of Methods, Göteborg University (1990-1999) and at School of Communication and Education, Jönköping University (2002-2006).
I am Chairman at the Research Council of Norway for well-funded research on education; 40 million NOK (2005-2010).
I have been assistant dean at the University of Jönköping (2005-2008)
I am a member of the advisory board for research in The Swedish Teachers’ Union.
In addition, and as an important complement to my research, I founded The Academy for School Related Research(2008). The Academy is a network, a collaboration between Jönköping University, 13 municipalities, in all 182 schools, 3.280 teachers and 39.352 pupils, and 2.300 small entrepreneurial companies in the County of Jönköping. In all the network roughly invest 7.5 million SEK yearly for research and professional development in the local schools, see www.hlk.hj.se/akademin. I also founded The Knowledge Epidemic for Teachers (2008) – an Annual Conference for Professional Knowledge Sharing with 2.400 participating teachers every year from the region, see www.hlk.hj.se/epidemin.
In 1990, I founded the research journal Didaktisk Tidskrift/Nordic Journal of Teaching and Learning – for Practitioners and Researchers. Since 1990, I have been legally responsible for the journal and have the main responsibility for the research quality in articles that are publicized. So far, DT/NJTL have published 19 volumes, 76 issues, 380 articles.
